How to boost creativity in the kitchen: turn your cooking into an art form

The ephemeral is also art. There is no reason why a creation must necessarily endure physically over time. But if it has character and its own style, its legacy will remain. This kind of miracle can occur in the kitchen: a dish becomes a masterpiece and suddenly it transforms food into memory and becomes a unique experience. Why not present your artistic creations to your loved ones? They will enjoy it and so will you.

Your life is hectic, that's for sure; always in a hurry. But from time to time you treat your palate to some amazing flavors. An experience to enjoy on your own or with your loved ones. I challenge you to enhance that experience. Call it a challenge or simply an opportunity to boost your enjoyment. Let's not limit ourselves to just sampling a magnificent dish; let’s learn how to cook it. Start from scratch, just like a painter who selects his canvas and paints or a sculptor choosing his raw material to work with. It's well known that food allows us to travel through time. It enables us to recollect our childhood or remember a trip. Take advantage of this opportunity.

You have a head start; not all fine cooking is difficult. Not at all. Art does not necessarily entail difficulty and complication. Art means embracing creativity, doing something unique. Even in the kitchen. You don’t have to compare yourself with anyone. Just enjoy and keep learning! With every dish, you will become a little more skilled. A little more of a maestro. Imagine that you have an empty plate and another one with the food already perfectly prepared on it. This is the equivalent of a blank canvas and a finished painting that is ready to be enjoyed. Here are some tips to help you take your first steps in this art. I’ve written them down in my old notebook and today I’d like to share them with you:

DON’T FORCE YOUR CREATIVITY AND ALWAYS WRITE DOWN YOUR IDEAS

You have to give meaning to that empty plate. Creativity doesn’t just come "because I say so.” That’s why it’s crucial that you let your ingenuity work when you really fancy using it. When you feel passionate about it. Never force creativity. Listen to what I say (and remember, as I've mentioned before, I’ve been around for many years). By the way, experience has taught me that the best ideas, the things that inspire us the most, come at the most unexpected moments. Do whatever it takes to write down your ideas.

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN EXPERIENCES AND PUT ALL YOUR PASSION INTO YOUR COOKING

Slow things down. Serenity. Originality and creativity require you to leave your comfort zone. And you can do this by enjoying experiences and nurturing your mind. The result will be great ideas for the kitchen. This proactive approach leads to great works of art. Why do you think Cesira and Costantino achieved such levels of mastery with Carapelli? Because they put all their hearts, all their passion and all their love into their creation. I need you to be excited, to look for the flavor that will transport you to a unique moment. May you find that aroma that reminds you of a special person. Try to experience the whole process with intensity. Ferrán Adrià, one of the most renowned chefs in the world, has stated that "sometimes you can create with feelings, not only with techniques.” And this is from a pro who is passionate about technique and optimum innovation in the kitchen! So just imagine the value of passion!

DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL AND ENJOY EACH DISH TO THE FULL

Dear friend, go out and fail! I don't care if your food is burned or you add too much pepper; I don’t care if your meat goes dry and the rice in your risotto is undercooked. I couldn’t care less! It’s as simple as that! What I do ask you to do is to learn. The next time, when you succeed, you will enjoy it twice as much. And when you share your work and enjoy it with your friends or family, you will appreciate that sense of creativity.

With this last point, my eye has just wondered over to a bottle of Carapelli. Here is something that offers us the creativity of a great Italian designer, whilst maintaining the heritage of the recipients Carapelli has previously used. A veritable masterpiece! That's what you have to call it, because it’s bursting with personality. Every time you pick it up you look at it and enjoy its design. It not only contains a marvelous extra virgin olive oil! It's packed with passion! That's why it's an essential addition to the living museum that your kitchen must become, one that you, with your irrepressible creativity, must fill with meaning.
